In this post, I want to give some more examples of how my tips can be used to help others with their kids and expanding palates.

 

The other day one of our wisemommies’ readers told me that her son isn’t a picky eater, but if he just doesn’t like a food he won’t eat it. Stop right there! For our house the words don’t, can’t, never, won’t….are “null and void”! Yes, I’ve stated before I believe it is ok for the child to not like certain foods but only after all resources have been exhausted. Remember, not 1 size shoe fits all so not 1 of my picky eater tips, alone, would work for all. If one of my tips doesn’t work, try a different tip from a different post from us wisemommies.

 

Senerio #1

So wisemommies’ reader said that her son will eat mushrooms on a pizza but not separately. Some specific tips for her then come from the following posts:

  3. Getting your Child to Expand Their Palate, #9, #1, #2, & #11 (at the grocery store, let him choose the type of mushroom he wants to eat) #5 let your child tear off the stems and add a heathly dip inside

She said that he will eat mushrooms on pizza but not separately. Mushrooms definitely change in texture and taste depending on what mushroom and how it is cooked. I think it is fabulous that he is eating them on the pizza and I would be happy with that. However, if she did want him to eat mushrooms by themselves then I would recommend some of my tips from the above posts. Try some different dips for the mushrooms, different mushrooms, and or cooking the mushrooms. I love sautéed mushrooms, yummy, especially with just a little bit of butter, some onions, garlic and balsamic vinegar. Yes please!

Wisemommies’ reader also said that her son won’t eat Physalis fruit because they taste sour. I have to agree that they can be sour and or an acquired taste (hint hint…acquired taste). I also love that she is trying an unusual fruit originating from South America. We wisemommies definitely serve up different and unusual dishes and foods and encourage others to do so as well.

 

Wisemommies’ reader said that she tried the wisemommies tip of getting him involved and having fun with the fruit by helping to peel. Awesome, we love to hear that! However, did she also try other sensory senses? Discussing color, shape, smell, touch? Did she get excited about the fruit and try selling it through several different and creative ways? If no, then she didn’t really try to get him to eat the fruit. Not a big deal, but, in my opinion, she can’t say that he doesn’t like it and just won’t eat it if she hasn’t followed my tips from the post “More Picky-Pointers: Finally got my son to eat broccoli!”

  4. I have a great recipe (will be sharing in the future) for cooking Physalis with carrots and or fish. This takes the sourness out of the fruit.

Another added benefit to succeeding in getting her son to expand his palate and having an open mind, the fruit could also serve useful the next time he got sick. The Physalis fruit is used in many cultures to help with many ailments such as sore throats, colds, coughing, high fevers, and eczema.
