Thyroid Cancer PDF Print E-mail

x-raysThyroid cancer is the fastest growing cancer in women. However, there are precautions women can make to possibly prevent this. According to Dr. OZ, the increase in thyroid cancer could possibly be linked to the use of dental x-rays and mammograms.

Don’t think that thyroid cancer is something you might get when older. Click here for an example of an 18yr & 31yr old dealing with thyroid cancer. Doctors at the Cancer Institute in Boston, Mass state that most patients they see are young. According to the National Cancer Institute, “thyroid cancer is more common in women under 45”.

What you can do to be proactive in protecting yourself:

  1. Next time you get a mammogram, ask for the “thyroid guard”

Also, Parents, make sure your children’s exposure to radiation via x-rays is limited since the thyroid gland and all cells in the body are especially sensitive during childhood.

What you can do to be proactive in protecting yourself and your family (especially children in general to x-ray radiation):

  1. At the dentist’s office, make sure, or ask that the “flap” on the apron is lifted up and wrapped around your neck.
  2. Make sure you express any concerns about X-ray safety to the radiographer or radiologist
  3. If your child needs an x-ray, do anything you can to make sure they stay still. You do not want repeat exposures because of blurred images which would be usable for a diagnosis.
  4. Make sure body parts that do not need to be x-rayed are shielded.
  5. Parents, try to be in the room with your child to make sure they are being shielded. I say this because I remember a radiologist, during an x-ray for dental care, that did not protect me from the radiation as a child of 8ish? I remember the tech getting frustrated with the protective jacket that kept falling off of me, so for the last x-ray(s)(?), she said something about the radiation being so low, and I would be fine. As a small child, I put my trust in this adult, as most children do. Now, I cringe to think of the radiation exposure to my chest, thyroid, and body. I don’t think it is usual that parents are invited back into the x-ray room which means that parents have to be proactive/pushy and ask if they can be present.

Information like this is important for all women and families to know. Please pass along this information. Everyone should be proactive with thyroid care as the thyroid regulates heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature and weight gain/loss. Thanks to Judy for passing the Dr.Oz information about thyroid cancer to us wisemommies! I hope you pass this on to your friends and family.

Child's First Hair Cut PDF Print E-mail
Friday, January 13, 2012

OK, all my friends were beginning to ask when I would get a haircut for my son. It was getting too long, but just so sad, for me, to get his first haircut. My friend's son, also, needed a haircut, so we went together. My friend's distraction not only helped me feel better, but we actually had fun. She took me to this fun little place called"snip-its". Stacey even gave me a coupon that she had printed from the website for $3 off the first visit. Loved my friend's thoughtfulness of not only picking me up, going with me for my son's first haircut, but even thinking to save me some money via a coupon. Thanks Stacey!!!

We arrived 15 minutes after they opened, 10:15am, and ended up waiting nearly an hour. However, we didn't mind because they have this fun little wait/play area. Our sons playing and waiting below.

They also had this little “stop man”, see the picture below, with the little stop sign and his hand up signalling for all to stop. Well, my son, who can’t read yet, thought the guy was there to give a “high five” to all. So my son walked past him, giving a high five on the way. Thought that was pretty cute/funny!

Also, the picture below, right, is my son actually "smiling" for the picture. He is not upset, I know, unique! Well, it is "his" "special" smile.

This place has a big "machine" that pops out a prize when you are finished with your haircut. The child puts a card in, the machine makes all these loud and funny noises and suddenly a prize materializes. My son, didn't have a card yet, since he hadn't his haircut, but he stuck his hand into the machine trying to get a toy out. The cute little boy standing behind him, pulled him aside, told him he couldn't do that and explained that he had to get a card first. Thought that was sweet of the boy!

You can see in the pictures, below, my son wanted to see what was going on behind the stop aka "high-five" man. He is definitely an observer. When he realized that he was waiting his turn to sit in one of the big chairs, beyond the stop sign, he wanted a closer look at what was happening. See below to him just standing and observing the other children.

So below are the pictures from his first haircut. Whimper whimper, tear roll, from me not my son. He was a champ.

I love these pictures, below left, because I captured both my “German” son and his sweet “French” friend getting a haircut at the same time. See reflections in mirror….Ahhhh, and finally he got his card for the machine after getting his haircut. He ran straight away to the toy maker for his prize. I must say, it is places like this, that I do love about America and being in it. Would not have found such a cool and fun place for my child's first haircut in Germany. Also love having some of my old college/Uni friends around to love on me...thanks again Stacey, was a fun day!

Why Stay-At-Home Moms Should Earn A $115,000 Salary PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, December 14, 2011

Asking for a raise is always hard to do so maybe this article will help reinforce my request. Wonder if my husband will give me a raise. Wait, I’m not getting paid at all. Lol. Jenna Goudreau, through her article, Why Stay-At-Home Moms Should Earn A $115,000 Salary, broke the numbers down, figuring just how underpaid we mothers are. Hmmmm, enlightening, as if we all don’t already know that. However, love the article, because it is articles like this that make us feel more appreciated, isn’t it?

While I truly believe there is no price tag that can ever be put on the joy and privilege of having the hands on experience of being able to stay home and raise your child, just look at other blog posts on wisemommies to see how much we love it, but the housework, laundry, cooking, home repairs, dealing with contractors, plumbers, painters, a/c, heater, lawn/garden care, planning/keeping up with all outside plans, sports, meetups, friends, gatherings, outings, and such, and the consistently self-sacrificing of yourself 24/7 mentally and physically to your family can be tiresome when we do not actually get a pay-check.

Therefore, it’s always nice when the hubby comes home and tells me in words how nice the house looks, how well the home is running, how wonderful our son is behaving, cleaning his room, eating all his food, or minding his manners, how delicious and healthy my home-cooked dinners are….just the words of appreciation. As a teacher, I know teachers are also underpaid but I earned my bonuses through the feedback of my students. It is the same now as a mother. We sacrifice monetary salary for show of appreciation and feedback via results of our children that we are raising. We stay-at-home mothers are sowing the majority of fruit into our children’s hearts, and we later will be able to see what has grown of our garden…..If we stay-at-home mothers are truly investing our time, opportunity, and ourselves into our children then our payment is like a long-term investment with an incredible pay-out…much more rewarding than any monetary value. It is wonderful and such a blessing to be a stay-at-home mother!!!
